What are the symptoms of head lice?
A: An itchy scalp. A tickling feeling of something moving on the scalp or through the hair. You may see red bite marks on the scalp or red rash on the back of the neck. Some individuals exhibit no symptoms at all.
What are nits and what do they look like?
A: Nits (louse eggs) are very small, about the size of a sesame seed. They are laid by the adult female and are attached at an angle to the base of the hair shaft, with a very strong glue. They are yellowish, tan or coffee covered ovals, usually found near the crown of the head, around the ears, and near the nape of the neck. Nits take about 7 to 10 days to hatch.
Can lice jump or fly?
A: Contrary to popular belief, lice cannot fly or jump. They do not have wings. Lice are crawling insects. They only way to get head lice is through close contact or sharing clothing or hats from an individual who has it.
What do I need to do in order to get rid of lice in my home?
A: Lice are NOT living in your home! Nits (eggs) need the warmth of your scalp and food supply (your blood) in order to hatch and survive. Lice want to be in your head. If a louse falls off, it’s by accident and it will die shortly thereafter. Wash all bedding and vacuum as you normally would. We recommend changing your pillow cases daily as an added precaution.
