If you just received the dreaded news that your child has head lice, you’re probably thinking “why me?” Well, we can assure you that you’re not alone. The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that, “it’s probably impossible to totally prevent head lice infestations.”

Head lice are extremely contagious, so it’s important to be checking your child regularly for symptoms of lice. No matter what myths you may have heard about head lice, having head lice is not an indication that you’re unclean. As a matter of fact, lice like clean hair!

Although there is no way to totally prevent head lice, there are a few things you can do to lower the odds of your family getting head lice.

  • Teach your child to avoid sharing items that have been on or near another child’s head. These items include: hair brushes, combs, hats, scarves, helmets, towels.
  • Make sure your child hangs up his or her coat and hat on an individual hook, instead of just tossing their outer garments in a pile with other classmates clothing.
  • Regularly clean items that your child’s head has direct contact with, such as car seats, pillows, head phones.

If your child does come home with head lice one day, we’re here to help. Lice Tamers offers natural and thorough lice removal services seven days a week. Call us for more information at 877-237-LICE. You can also visit us online at www.LiceTamers.com or on our Facebook page.

Arizona Family News recently reported some pointers to knowing about and tackling the situation of lice.

First, head lice and nits, louse eggs, can infest not only hair but eyebrows and eyelashes too. The most common methods of contracting lice are through sharing clothes, beding and comes or brushes with someone infected.

Arizona Family News says the symptoms of lice are: itchy scalp, red bumps, tiny white nits attached to individual strands of hair and crawling sensations on the head.

There are many kinds of treatments to curing head lice from over-the-counter lotions and shampoos to home remedies. Products like lindane shampoo and ivermectin should only be used after multiple failed attempts at getting rid of lice. Lindane contains toxins that could be harmful to the person infested. Ivermectin is a pill that is generally used after shampoo and lotions do not work.

Ivermectin also comes in a prescription lotion called Sklice. This is used only one time without leaving the hair messy. As a prescription, Sklice can cost up to $300 without insurance.

Let us know if you have any additional tips on our Facebook page.

  • Encourage your kids to avoid sharing things that have been near another child's head. Including: hairbrushes, combs, hats, scarves, towels, helmets, pillows and sleeping bags.
  • Teach your kids to hang up their coat on an individual hook, or some other separate area when they get to school instead of just tossing their coat on a hook along with another child's.
  • Regularly clean things that your child's head has direct contact with, such as car seats, pillows, head phones.
  • Review some head lice pictures to help you understand what you are looking for in your child's hair, including live lice and nits (lice eggs).
  • Recognize the symptoms of head lice. Symptoms include itchy scalp and small red bumps or sores on the back of your child's neck and scalp.
