If you just received the dreaded news that your child has
head lice, you’re probably thinking “why me?” Well, we can assure you that you’re
not alone. The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that, “it’s probably
impossible to totally prevent head lice infestations.”
Head lice are extremely contagious, so it’s important to be checking your child regularly for symptoms of lice. No matter what myths you may have heard about head lice, having head lice is not an indication that you’re unclean. As a matter of fact, lice like clean hair!
Although there is no way to totally prevent head lice, there
are a few things you can do to lower the odds of your family getting head lice.
- Teach your child to avoid sharing items that have been on or near another child’s head. These items include: hair brushes, combs, hats, scarves, helmets, towels.
- Make sure your child hangs up his or her coat and hat on an individual hook, instead of just tossing their outer garments in a pile with other classmates clothing.
- Regularly clean items that your child’s head has direct contact with, such as car seats, pillows, head phones.
