Lice Infestation Sparks Outcry From Angry Mom Against School

On a kitchen shelf in Jennifer Matthews' home there are a half dozen bottles designed to fight a personal invasion, but in most cases they simply do not work.

Just ask Jennifer.
The widowed mother of a 4th grader has expended all the spare income she can muster battling the lice she believes her little girl brought home from school.
"We've been to the doctor. The doctor has prescribed medicine for her hair and every time we send her back to school the nurse says she's clean and then the next day she's getting sent home with lice again," said Matthews.
Matthews is angry that educators at Sheldon ISD's Carroll Elementary allow children to return to school when it's not absolutely clear their hair and scalp are free of lice and their eggs.
You could call it non- compliance with the "no nit" policies adopted by other districts.
"They should be more proactive and say this is definitely coming from our school. This is not an isolated case. There are several children that have been sent home today alone," said Matthews.
While Sheldon ISD initially called Matthew's daughter an isolated case, the district has since identified two more Carroll students removed from class with lice.
Matthew's neighbor and Carroll parent Joseph Teel says the school nurse missed the lice he discovered in the hair of his two daughters.
"There is only so much you can do in your home. If the other parents are not doing it it's like a plague. It just keeps on spreading. There's only so much one family can do to stop it," said Teel.
The lice outbreak at Carroll is hardly isolated. Schools all over the greater Houston area are contending with infestations that pose no serious health threat, but linger as a stubborn source of misery for parents and students.
Lice removal experts have seen a 30 percent increase in case load over the past year and say over-the-counter remedies have little impact on the bugs and even less on their eggs.
Painstaking extraction appears to be the only remedy.
"You have to pick them out. You have to take the time to stand over your child for hours on end pulling them out of the hair and your child is crying and your back is hurting. There's no other way you can't rely on the medication you have to physically work to make it happen," said Matthews.
Sheldon ISD says it is considering examining the entire Carroll student body as a proactive measure.

Springtime Lice Prevention Tips

Contrary to what most people believe, head lice is a year-round problem.  However, there are certain times
of the year when head lice tend be more prevalent. Whenever, kids get together in large groups, the chances of head lice being spread among them tends to increase. The spring season is one of those times.

Head lice prevention starts with being aware of how it is spread.  Head lice do not jump or fly.  So how do children contract head lice from one another?

The main way in which head lice is spread is through direct contact, i.e. head-to-head contact, sharing brushes, hats and/or head gear.

This spring be sure to tell your child not to share head gear with the other players on their team.  If there is no option but to share, be sure that your child wears a protective barrier between their head and the head gear such as a baseball cap.

When you hear your child has lice, we're sure panic immediately begins to set in. If you have questions about lice, we're here to help!

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is "What do I need to do in order to get rid of lice in my home?"

We've got your answer. Lice are NOT living in your home! You can rest easy tonight! Nits (eggs) need the warmth of your scalp and a food supply (your blood) in order to hatch and survive. Lice want to be in your head, not in your home!

As a precaution, wash all bedding and vacuum as you normally would if someone in your home had head lice. We also recommend changing pillow cases.

Did you know September is Head Lice Prevention month

It's no surprise that September is the chosen month to spread awareness about head lice. Back to school brings back the chances of your children returning home with those little pests known as head lice!

Here are a few head lice prevention tips that you can use to help prevent your children from contracting head lice this September:

Encourage your kids to avoid sharing things that have been on or near another child's head, including hairbrushes, combs, hats, scarves, towels, helmets, pillows, sleeping bags, etc.

Teach your kids to hang up their coat and hat on an individual hook, or some other separate area, when they get to school, instead of just throwing them in a pile with other classmates' clothing.

Regularly clean things that your child's head has direct contact with, such as car seats, pillows, head phones, etc.

Review some head lice pictures to help you understand and identify what you're looking for in your child's hair, including live life and nits (lice eggs).

Check your child for nits and live head lice at least once a week, keeping in mind that although you may find head lice anywhere, they are often found at the back of your child's head, near his/her neck and behind ears.

Recognize the symptoms of head lice, which includes an itchy scalp and small red bumps or sores on the back of your child's neck or scalp. Don't panic, though, if your child must be treated for head lice, Lice Tamers is here to help treat your family in the safest way possible.
