The Project Runway beauty reveals she recently received the bad news in a phone call from a nurse at one of her daughter's schools, and quickly discovered her other three kids' were infested with head lice.

The panicked mum, who was at work at the time, asked her hair stylists to give her a quick check for lice, and was relieved when they told her she was bug free, but hours later assistants she had tasked with treating her kids' hair found Klum had been walking around with lice and eggs in her hair too.

She explains, "I'm at work (with my) hairdresser (and) I said, 'Can you please check if I have lice?' They're looking and looking and they're like, 'No, no, no, everything is fine', so I'm like, 'Great!'

"All four of my children, they're at home, they're all being picked... In all these years, that has never happened. It's a nightmare! You have to wash everything. And then I come home and I sit down and the lice fairies (assistants) look.

"Sure enough, (I'm) covered in lice eggs and lice on my head. Who knows how many months I've had these already? I mean, I went to Australia to New Zealand to London to New York! I went all over the place! I took them global...! It's a mum's nightmare."

Curing head lice: Chemicals, combs or a little outside help?

Curing head lice: Chemicals, combs or a little outside help?

Melissa Levin, Nurse Practitioner and owner of Lice Tamers Checks a Child for Head Lice

Many parents have been there: Your child comes home from school, camp or sports with head lice, and you panic. That was exactly what Plainview mother Michelle Geller did when the wingless, bloodsucking insects were found in her 10-year-old daughter Nicole's hair.
"I was hysterical. I started to rip my house apart. I threw out all the pillows, bedding, headbands, brushes and hundreds of dollars of American Girl dolls," says Geller, 39, a teacher who was also concerned that her two other young daughters, also with thick, long hair, could catch lice, too.Geller had two choices -- get treatment or do it herself. But if she did it herself with over-the-counter remedies, she'd be right in the middle of a raging debate on the safety and effectiveness of home treatments.
The topical drugs used to treat lice are insecticides and can be dangerous if they are misused or overused, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency encourages people to avoid overusing lice medication unless instructed by a pharmacist or physician. Other recommendations include not treating an infested person more than two to three times with the same medication and avoiding the use of multiple head lice drugs at the same time. For Geller, treatment with some of the over-the-counter products was not an option. "I was not putting pesticides on my kid's head. These over-the-counter products have so many chemicals in them. I don't know what the risks or side effects of using them are," she says.
A friend told her about a local lice removal company that does not use harsh chemicals, Lice Tamers Lice Treatment Center, which makes house calls and also has a shop in Melville. The owner, nurse practitioner Melissa Levin, spent three hours going strand by strand through her daughter's hair while teaching Geller what to look for. "She taught me what was a nit and what a louse looks like," says Geller. (Nits are eggs and young lice and require magnification to see.) "I found it very educational."Geller, in fact, recently relived her family's drama. This month, her 5-year-old daughter also came down with head lice. This time Geller didn't get out of sorts. She had her own plan in place: "I ran to Melissa, and she treated my daughter and now all the lice is gone."
LICE AND SUMMER CAMP
Although many camps have their own head lice policies, it is important to be proactive, says Melissa Levin, a family nurse practitioner and owner of Melville-based LiceTamers Treatment Center. "Parents are starting to call me now to book their pre- and post-camp lice check appointments," which are $25 with a discounted rate for those who prepay, she says. "Most kids come straight from the camp. It's a madhouse."Children staying in tight quarters at sleepaway camp should run a fine-toothed lice comb through the hair twice a week, she says. Applying some shampoos, conditioners, gels and sprays that contain tea tree oil, peppermint and rosemary may help keep lice at bay, she adds. Braiding long hair is also recommended.

Lice Infestation Sparks Outcry From Angry Mom Against School

On a kitchen shelf in Jennifer Matthews' home there are a half dozen bottles designed to fight a personal invasion, but in most cases they simply do not work.

Just ask Jennifer.
The widowed mother of a 4th grader has expended all the spare income she can muster battling the lice she believes her little girl brought home from school.
"We've been to the doctor. The doctor has prescribed medicine for her hair and every time we send her back to school the nurse says she's clean and then the next day she's getting sent home with lice again," said Matthews.
Matthews is angry that educators at Sheldon ISD's Carroll Elementary allow children to return to school when it's not absolutely clear their hair and scalp are free of lice and their eggs.
You could call it non- compliance with the "no nit" policies adopted by other districts.
"They should be more proactive and say this is definitely coming from our school. This is not an isolated case. There are several children that have been sent home today alone," said Matthews.
While Sheldon ISD initially called Matthew's daughter an isolated case, the district has since identified two more Carroll students removed from class with lice.
Matthew's neighbor and Carroll parent Joseph Teel says the school nurse missed the lice he discovered in the hair of his two daughters.
"There is only so much you can do in your home. If the other parents are not doing it it's like a plague. It just keeps on spreading. There's only so much one family can do to stop it," said Teel.
The lice outbreak at Carroll is hardly isolated. Schools all over the greater Houston area are contending with infestations that pose no serious health threat, but linger as a stubborn source of misery for parents and students.
Lice removal experts have seen a 30 percent increase in case load over the past year and say over-the-counter remedies have little impact on the bugs and even less on their eggs.
Painstaking extraction appears to be the only remedy.
"You have to pick them out. You have to take the time to stand over your child for hours on end pulling them out of the hair and your child is crying and your back is hurting. There's no other way you can't rely on the medication you have to physically work to make it happen," said Matthews.
Sheldon ISD says it is considering examining the entire Carroll student body as a proactive measure.

Springtime Lice Prevention Tips

LICE TAMERS

Contrary to what most people believe, head lice is a year-round problem.  However, there are certain times
of the year when head lice tend be more prevalent. Whenever, kids get together in large groups, the chances of head lice being spread among them tends to increase. The spring season is one of those times.

Head lice prevention starts with being aware of how it is spread.  Head lice do not jump or fly.  So how do children contract head lice from one another?

The main way in which head lice is spread is through direct contact, i.e. head-to-head contact, sharing brushes, hats and/or head gear.

This spring be sure to tell your child not to share head gear with the other players on their team.  If there is no option but to share, be sure that your child wears a protective barrier between their head and the head gear such as a baseball cap.

Lice Tamers is offering FREE head checks now through the end of June.  For information or to set up an appointment, call 631-479-2595 or go to www.licetamers.com

Lice FAQ Answered

When you hear your child has lice, we're sure panic immediately begins to set in. If you have questions about lice, we're here to help!

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is "What do I need to do in order to get rid of lice in my home?"

We've got your answer. Lice are NOT living in your home! You can rest easy tonight! Nits (eggs) need the warmth of your scalp and a food supply (your blood) in order to hatch and survive. Lice want to be in your head, not in your home!

As a precaution, wash all bedding and vacuum as you normally would if someone in your home had head lice. We also recommend changing pillow cases.
